What Every Wanna Be Editor Should Know About Professional Book Editing

Professional book editing is an excellent profession if you love to read and critique other people’s works whether it is a student’s essay, an author’s new book, or even a business owner’s literature. If you would like to do book editing it does requires skills as well as a degree in journalism to land you a position in this field. An editor is able to transform words into perfection no matter what the topic is written in, and they will perfect it. Editors all have degrees and extensive experience when it comes to proof reading and writing and they usually have a track record of successfully published presentations, book and papers.

Book editing can be divided into three categories-

Copy edit -it involves correcting the spelling, typing errors and correcting grammatical errors in the script. It generally entails following rules for terminology and punctuations, but little attention to the meaning of the script written. Copy editor generally works in tandem with the guidelines set by the publishers.

Hard edit-Instead of going page by page, the hard editor reads the entire book first before suggesting any changes. The suggestions may include something akin to adding more explanatory texts in the book, or to combine or eliminate certain section in the book. The hard editor generally charges by the number of hours worked.

A technical edit- is something similar to fact checking. This kind of editing is generally associated with technical books and journals. Before publishing such books, it is important that the facts and the statistics given are verified. It is important for the technical editor to be an expert in his field, though he may not be an expert at grammar.

Apart from checking the script, it is also important to pay heed to few more things before the book heads for getting published. The cover of the book should be properly aligned with the spell check. The same applies to the back cover as well. The spine text should be properly centered. Hardcover book jacket along with the inside flap should also be proof read before getting printed and last but not the least, the book should have proper margin and fonts, headers, footers and proper titles. These all form a part of the book editing process.

It is very important that the book editors have a long-lasting relationship with the authors. Most of the authors are generally known to stick to only one editor throughout their career.

A lot of freelancing book editing jobs are available today. Before one opts for such a job, he or she has to ensure that the person should have a penchant for spotting and correcting spelling and grammar mistakes. Also, he/she should be acquainted with the general layout of the books and is ready to read and reread the manuscripts many times over. Freelance book editors generally work for publishing houses or e- books writers. They should be well acquainted with the technicalities of grammar. They should also have to be voracious readers themselves, because only a well read person can do justice to the job of a book editing. It becomes easier for new entrant in this field to start off with smaller projects and once they have gained enough expertise in the field, they can move on to bigger projects.

Question by Truth: Is it a good idea for an aspiring photographer to read about the technical stuff in Photography books?
I was just reading about some photographers like Diane Arbus who didn’t even know about stuff like exposure, apeture, and f-stops. Do you think it is a good investment of time for an aspiring photographer to read the technical books on photography? Or do you think it’s better to just get out there and shoot?

Answer by Vince M
If you really think Arbus didn’t know “anything” about that technial stuff, then your reading material has badly misinformed you. Especially back then, there weren’t a lot of the kind of “point and shoot” cameras you see now. There were basic, box cameras, and, eventually some like the Kodak Brownies, but these aren’t the type of equipment Diane Arbus used. Hers were more sophisticated than these. And because they were, she had to know how to make proper settings for her to get good results. No one can possibly say that all her famous work was the result of pure luck.

What does NOT really matter is the scientific reasons cameras have adjustments and setting. What does matter is that there ARE reasons for each setting, and expected results for them.

PictureSlide.com is the newest player in the fast growing online photo book marketplace.

The photo book marketplace is still in the infancy stages, with many people not even knowing they exist. For those who do, they can be addictive to create and collect.

Photo books are the newest way to store and display images. Through the Internet, customers upload their images and layout pages using free software. The result is a professionally printed “coffee table” style book.

These photo books are often used to display pictures of family, sports events, vacations, weddings and any special events.

Although some companies have been providing photo book services for some time, the software has been difficult to use, limited in the layout options, time consuming to create, and the quality of the book color and durability varies.

PictureSlide.com solves those problems. The software they provide has been under development for the past three years. It is very intuitive, user friendly, robust and has automation that can allow a customer to create a book in less than 10 minutes.

PictureSlide.com caters to two types of customers. Those that have very limited technical or creative skill sets and those that have very technical and creative skill sets.

For those that are limited in their abilities, PictureSlide.com’s patent pending software allows users to select a theme and number of pages, the software then automatically and professionally creates a book.

For those that have strong abilities, PictureSlide.com’s software includes tools that allow them to manipulate images and create custom layouts with text for each page.

The software also allows users to save their work so they can work on it at their leisure.

Another major difference is PictureSlide.com’s quality and variety of the final printed books.

Most of the photo book providers offer photo books in one size and style. Typically, Hard Cover, 11 x 8.5 with a picture window on the front with a very limited selection of cover materials. Most of the books are assembled by hand using a desktop gluing system and can be susceptible to pages falling out with heavy use.

PictureSlide.com is different in that it offers five different book sizes which include 6 x 4, 8 x 6, 8 x 8, 11 x 8.5 and 8.5 x 11. They also provide Hard Cover and Soft cover, in a large selection of cover materials, including a photo cover wrap. They are the only provider in the marketplace doing the photo cover wrap. PictureSlide.com also professionally creates their books using state of the art book making equipment and each book is printed with acid free, archival quality paper, and sewn to ensure durability.

PictureSlide.com’s plan is to educate the marketplace and provide the easiest to use software and highest quality photo book products to the online consumer.
